Upper Black Box Canyon Viewpoint Photos

We didn’t get to do as much hiking as we had hoped due to my stupidity on a previous hike in Dominguez Canyon, CO. I have large scabs on my heels where the blisters once were so serious hikes were out of the question. We did manage to find a nice 1.5 mile hike to a viewpoint over the Upper Black Box Canyon area of the San Rafael Swell. This hike is located near the closed end of Mexican Bend Rd. adjacent to the Wildlife Study Area.

The hike is pretty easy even with blistered/bleeding heels in Keen sandals. We did it in 90+ degree heat. We brought plenty of water for us and the dogs. There’s a short climb down to the edge of the viewpoint that’s easy to manage.

While this hike is short in distance it’s extremely dangerous if rain is in the forecast at all. The BLM signs have warnings all over the place about the dangers of flash floods. The last quarter mile of this hike is in a wash with no easy way to climb out. There was no rain in sight the day we snapped these photos and videos. We relaxed for an hour or so at the viewpoint to let the sun go down a bit. The shade in the wash on the way out was a huge relief.

The video clips are from the very end of the trail at the viewpoint location.
