Trip Report: Posada Margherita

I hope to do trip reports of the various places we travel and the places we stay while we’re traveling. On our recent trip to Tulum we stayed at Posada Margherita. We stayed there a few nights on a previous trip and I lobbied hard with the Travel Agency to let us stay there on this trip. (That’s the Travel Agency modeling in the photo to the left.)

I mentioned a little about the fine owners of Posada Margherita in a previous post. These guys are great. There’s some stuff out there on Trip Advisor that’s not very flattering. I don’t agree with them at all.

One of the best things about Posada Margherita is the restaurant. They make some great Italian food inspired by traditional recipes from the Genoa region of Italy. Every night there’s a couple of fresh fish options and a handful of fresh pasta dishes. Everything is made fresh on site daily, even the pasta. The smells from the kitchen during the afternoon are mouth watering. I’d eat there every night if it were an option. The Travel Agency doesn’t offer that as an option. ;)

More photos after the jump

I snapped a bunch of photos of the grounds at Posada Margherita early in the morning the last day we were there. All of the photos of the grounds were taken around 7 am. That’s why they’re a little dark.

Posada Margherita is a small hotel, only 8 rooms. The rooms are large and well-appointed. There are four two-storey buildings of rooms. Each floor is a room. The second floor rooms have a palapa style roof. (We’ve never stayed in one of the second floor rooms. They’re more expensive and we like to travel cheap if possible. I bet the views from the second floor is pretty impressive.

Posada Margherita produces their own power on site. They use wind and solar energy with the occasional need for a generator. Most rooms do not have power outlets in them for things like notebook computers, hair dryers, etc. There are no televisions or air conditioning. There are very nice floor standing fans in the rooms which keep things comfy. Each room has a few large hollowed out candles with oil lamps in them. They are a very nice touch for evening mood lighting or night lights. each room also has original works of art from local artists that are tasteful.

This first photo is the path leading up from the small parking area along the road. It’s a concrete walkway unlike many of the other places in Tulum that are all sand. The concrete makes it nice if you have rolling luggage and dive bags.

The rooms closer to the road are a little noisier than the others. Some of the road noise and generator noise from the neighbors does disturb the peace a bit in the early evening hours. It doesn’t seem like this noise affects the rooms closer to the beach. The good thing is there’s no noise at night to disturb you while sleeping.

This next picture is taken in the same spot as the first one, I’m just rotated 180 degrees looking towards the beach and restaurant.

One minor complaint I do have about Posada Margherita is the beds. I like a firm mattress. Both times we’ve stayed there the mattresses have been incredibly firm, like foam carpet padding over concrete firm. I can still get a good night’s sleep but there’s much tossing and turning involved.

Here’s another photo looking towards the beach from just outside of Room 6.

Getting closer to the restaurant.

A few steps closer here. I do like the staircase in the left edge of the photo. It services the upstairs of both buildings.

This photo is taken facing back towards the road. The staircase on the right is the same one that was in the left in the previous photo.

This is the restaurant. At night it’s very romantic. We had quite a few bottles of wine sitting in there.

In this photo I’m standing just outside the restaurant looking towards the beach. The small elevated deck area in the right portion of the frame is a comfortable place to have a bottle of wine and some dessert after dinner. You can kick back and stargaze. We were lucky to have a full moon and clear skies the week we were there.

The beach chairs are quite nice. There’s plenty for all of the guests. I especially liked the palapa shaded seating areas. I’m not into sunbathing.
