Tales from the Tent

May 14th, 2008 by Rufus

When I’m updating from inside a tent I’ll try to include it as part of the title of the entry. I think it’s pretty cool that I’m able to be in a tent at Colorado National Monument getting some work done and posting updates on my travels.

I don’t have much time tonight before my battery dies so no pictures but there’s one video from the road.

We drove about 270 miles today from Fort Collins, CO hrough Denver and then on I-70 west to the Colorado National Monument which is just south of Fruita, CO. The Cruiser apparently gets altitude sickness over 8,000 feet and gets really anemic over 10,000. We did about 40 miles at 30 MPH in third gear. These old diesels need lots of air to run right. The air is just too thin up there between Vail and Denver. We had to pull over at one point before it started overheating. We took a break for a half hour and I adjusted the injection pump which made a huge difference. The rest of the ascent went much beter even though it was slow going with the flashers on.

Here’s what we covered today:

We had a nice dinner at Hot Tomatoes in Fruita before heading up to the campground in the Monument. It’s pretty spectacular up here. We have a few photos and a video clip to share later of the area.

That’s all for now…too much work to catch up on with limited battery time.

Oh, and here’s a boring video from the road in Iowa to hold you over until the good stuff arrives. (Yes, it is that noisy in the Cruiser all the time.)
