When you’re self-employed and go on vacation for a month there’s always a ton of stuff to catch up on when you get home. That’s what I’ve been up to for the last week. Unfortunately mother nature threw me some curve balls mid-week that we a real pain in the butt.

Car Troubles Continued

June 2nd, 2008 by Rufus

We’re still broken down. The shop that’s working on it didn’t have any luck fixing it today and said they couldn’t source a replacement fuel injection line anywhere. I ordered a complete set from 4 Wheel Auto in Edmonton, Alberta. They are sending them via FedEx overnight. I should have them tomorrow. If the parts arrive early enough tomorrow we should be back on the road and home tomorrow night. I’ll be really surprised if FedEx does deliver them before 10:30 as the tracking info says.

At least we got to eat sushi again tonight ;)

Car Troubles

We ran into some car troubles today on the way to Connecticut. The number two cylinder high pressure injection line developed a leak at the injector fitting and was spraying fuel all over the engine compartment. I found the local doofus mechanic/wrecker operator and he “fixed” it with a horrible solder job. It lasted all of 10 minutes on the freeway before it started leaking again. We drove the remaining 140 miles to Hartford with fuel spraying all over the place under the hood. Thankfully diesel is less volatile than gasoline.

I hope to find a place to silver solder the line tomorrow so we can get back on the road.

valley of the gods overlookWe camped at a pretty spectacular spot for our last night in a tent. A friend recommended a location that overlooks the Valley of the Gods just 1.8 miles north of the Moki Dugway. Here’s some pictures and a quick video of our camp spot.

On the Way Home

Sorry about the lack of updates lately. We’re on the way home and haven’t had a lot of time to do computer stuff.

We left Crested Butte, CO on Wednesday morning around 8:45 am and arrived in Ohio 30 hours later. We drove straight through with our only stops being for food and diesel.

Tomorrow we leave Cleveland for Hartford and then head back up to home on Monday. It’s been 28 days. It will be nice to be home.

moki dugway photoAfter our last night of camping on our trip we headed south on Utah 261 down to the Valley of the Gods. I have a hard time believing that tractor trailers go up and down this grade. Here’s some photos and a video of what it’s like driving down this infamous road in our 1982 BJ42 diesel Land Cruiser.

We’re in Crested Butte, CO now. We arrived earlier this afternoon. Today’s driving was some of the most spectacular of the trip. We started the day in Durango, CO and drove up the “Million Dollar Highway” which is US550 north from Durango to Ouray, CO. It’s the most scenic road I’ve driven in the entire U.S.
