We’re in Tulum, Mexico a little earlier this year than when we normally come. I’m surpised how much trash is on the beach. Normally in the hotel zone the trash gets picked up. Not this year.
I took a few pictures of various interesting pieces of junk floating on the tide. Notice the barnacles on the Absolut bottle. All the trash is covered in them. I saw all kinds of things you wouldn’t expect to wash up on a beach like the top of a car battery.
The trash isn’t horrible and it’s easily avoidable. I can only imagine how bad the beaches look in the biosphere preserve where there’s no one to clean them up. A couple of years ago we took a 10 mile walk along the beach into the preserve and there’s significantly more trash down there.
The strange thing is that the trash doesn’t come from Mexico. It floats here on currents from South America. They must just dump their trash into the oceans down there for this much to make it to Mexico.
