Leaving Tulum Today

We’ll be checking out of Posada Margherita later this morning and heading up to a condo for one night in Akumal.  Akumal is a little closer to the airport.  We were told we have to be at the airport 3 hours before our departure time.  That seems kinda silly but maybe not unreasonable considering all bags are searched by hand at the Cancun airport for flights departing to the U.S.

Yesterday morning we took a long walk on the beach to breakfast.  We saw a brand new place named Ocho Tulum and figured we’d give it a shot.  Ocho Tulum is a very nice place.  We enjoyed our breakfast.  (I had a Mexican-style eggs Bennedict.  The translated name is Soldier Eggs.  Steph had a Continental breakfast with piles of fruit.)  We’d consider staying there next time.  The beachfront rooms are out of our price range at $320 a night but the garden view rooms are much more reasonable at $200 and you still get to use the same beach.

The owners of Posada Margherita are really good at what they do.  I’ve read some trip reports elsewhere on the internet that claim Alessandro and Frederico are rude and arrogant.  I’ve never gotten that sense from them.  Yesterday there was a problem with a couple of guests disturbing the general peace around here.  A couple of Paris Hilton wannabe stupid-spoiled-whore-type American girls had checked in and started drinking like fools.  They turned up their boom box so loud it could be heard clearly out on the road.  The other guests started complaining almost immediately.  The drunk girls were asked to quiet down by the owners a couple of times.  The third time they were asked to leave.  They shut the music off after that.  I have no idea how long their reservation was for but they only were going to get to use one night of it sleeping off their binge drinking episode.  They are checking out this morning.

I’m often embarrassed to be an American  when traveling overseas.  We frequently see groups of Americans traveling abroad.  They are loud and obnoxious in a way that shows no respect for the people around them.  It’s like they feel they’re entitled to be disruptive by virtue of their nationality.  I’m just guessing of course.

It’s been a great vacation.  We’ve had wonderful weather.  It’s not crowded on the beach.  We’ve met a few interesting people and had some great food too.   I hope to have a nice dinner in Akumal tonight and another empty flight on the way home.  I wonder how cold it is in Maine today.
