I’ve been sick the past 5 days. I just can’t seem to shake this head cold and sore throat. I think the sore throat would go away if the congestion wasn’t causing me to snore so horribly every night. I hope I’m better in 32 hours because that’s when our Jet Blue flight leaves Boston for Cancun. We’re going back to Tulum, Mexico.
We normally take our winter vacation around the time of our anniversary. Our anniversary falls right around President’s Day weekend in February each year which means flights are expensive and we’re traveling at the beginning of peak tourist hotel rates. That’s why we’re going earlier this year.
Last time we were in Tulum we stayed a few nights at Posada Margherita. It’s a small hotel right on the beach in Tulum. It’s owned and operated by two Italian guys that have been friends since birth. They are great hosts. The food is incredible. I’d eat there every meal if my wife would let me
We had such a nice time we decided to spend our entire vacation there this trip.
We don’t have any definite plans this time. We’re just going to relax and go with the flow. We’re not taking our dive stuff this trip only our snorkel gear. The weather forecast looks like it might rain a few days while we’re there. That’s OK. It will still be in the mid 80s instead of the single digit temps we’ll be leaving behind. (It’s three degrees outside as I type this at 9:20 pm. I expect it to be at least 3 below zero when I wake up tomorrow.)
I do hope we can make some time to snorkel in a nearby cenote and go climb the pyramid at Coba. My wife’s afraid of heights but the view across the jungle canopy from the top of the pyramid is worth the anxiety. Here’s a picture of the pyramid:

I think it’s pretty amazing that the government allows (actually encourages) this kind of thing. I don’t let my conscience get the best of me and just enjoy being a tourist as I climb the thing.
We’ll have internet access while were in Mexico. The internet service there is much better quality than what we get here in rural Maine. I was surprised how good it was last time we were there. It would be very easy to pick up shop and work from there for extended periods.
It’s so easy to get there now that Jet Blue flies direct to Cancun from Boston. It’s a 4.5 hour flight. We leave Boston by 7:30 am and I’m checked into the hotel and drinking my fifth Corona by 5pm and getting ready for dinner. There’s other places we’d like to go but with the US Dollar in the crapper and the ease of getting to Cancun we always seem to end up back in Mexico. We never stay remotely close to Cancun though. Cancun is for people that want the Las Vegas Strip setting and a beach. No thanks. That’s not my idea of vacation.
I always intend to brush up on my Español prior to these trips but never get around to it. The only thing I really need to remember is “Una mas cerveza por favor.”
