Izamal, Yucatan

izamal-corona-truckAfter our one night in Chichen Itza we set out on the road to Merida. The Yucatan Today magazine recommended a stop in Izamal for lunch. It was a perfect place to stop.

Izamal has roots way back in Mayan culture. The influence of the Spaniards dates back to the mid 1500s when they started building a massive convent and series of chapels over the top of a Mayan pyramid. There’s a few pictures of this complex of buildings in the gallery below.

One of the coolest things about Izamal is it’s all painted golden yellow. It’s a superficial thing but for some reason the color gives Izamal the feeling of being more inviting than either Valladolid or Merida.

We had lunch in Izamal at a restaurant named Kinich. It was the best meal we’ve had thus far in our trip. 100% authentic, traditional Yucatan style food. I’ve been trying the ‘sopa de lima’ (lime soup) with every meal. It’s a traditional soup for the region and every place has it’s own take on it. The sopa de lima at Kinich has been my favorite and I’ve had it at a dozen other meals thus far.

I’ll stop blabbing now…on to the photos….
