Hacienda Tepich Photos

hacienda tepich photoOn our last full day in Merida we decided to take a trip out to the Zona de Cenotes (area of cenotes) to check them out. The owner of B&B we were staying at recommended we stop for lunch at the old hacienda in Tepich Carillo. (Here’s a map of the area.)

Getting to Tepich Carillo was easy even though we made a couple of wrong turns and had to ask the locals for directions. The roads are very nice (by Mexican standards) up to this point too. Once we were in town we had to ask for directions to the hacienda. There are no signs or indications of where it is. We were confused because the old iron gate at the entrance was closed. We later realized it was closed because there were a pair of horses loose and grazing in the yard.

The specialty at Hacienda Tepich is rabbit. You can see the cute little bunnies in cages as you walk in to the restaurant area. I decided to give one a try. It was delicious. During lunch there was a brief downpour of heavy rain which was nice to watch from our dry location on the patio.

Hacienda Tepich is an interesting location. All around there’s evidence of mid 1700s architecture and in the background modern life intrudes in the form of cell phone towers and power lines. You can see this in some of our pictures below.

It’s a great place to stop for lunch on the way out to the cenotes. It’s very reasonably priced for the quantity and quality of the food. And you get to eat the Easter bunny in a nice red sauce too!
