D’yall See Any Indyuns?

We’re in Crested Butte, CO now. We arrived earlier this afternoon. Today’s driving was some of the most spectacular of the trip. We started the day in Durango, CO and drove up the “Million Dollar Highway” which is US550 north from Durango to Ouray, CO. It’s the most scenic road I’ve driven in the entire U.S.

Our previous day started from our campsite overlooking the Valley of the Gods just above the Moki Dugway. We have some great photos and video from that area I hope to post soon. We drove from there through the Valley of the Gods, around Monument Valley and then on to Durango, CO.

We stopped in to Mesa Verde National Park to check out the cliff dwellings. It was crowded but still worth the 60 mile diversion. (We’re over 3,900 miles on the trip since we left home.) While we were there some older hillbilly lady asked “D’yall see any indians?” as we were walking up the stairs from one of the exhibits. I couldn’t tell if she was serious so I replied “No, not today.” Sometimes I wonder if the National Parks System is a positive thing or a huge waste of taxpayer money.

It’s nice to be back in the mountains and out of the red rock desert. We’ll be here for a few days and then we’re off to Cleveland. We’re thinking about doing the drive from Crested Butte to Cleveland in one shot with no hotels. We’ll take tuns driving and let caffeine keep us moving along for the 23+ hours of driving time.

More tomorrow…
