After our last night of camping on our trip we headed south on Utah 261 down to the Valley of the Gods. I have a hard time believing that tractor trailers go up and down this grade. Here’s some photos and a video of what it’s like driving down this infamous road in our 1982 BJ42 diesel Land Cruiser.
The Moki Dugway drops 1100 feet of elevation in a matter of a few miles. It certainly feels like more than that when you’re driving it especially in a right hand drive vehicle like our Cruiser. (Right hand drive puts the driver much closer to the outside of the road in the U.S.) It’s no more difficult than some of the other roads we did on the trip. The only major difference being that this dirt cliff face roadway is a primary Utah State Highway and not a back road in the middle of nowhere.
The Moki Dugway has some pretty amazing views from the overlook point. You can see all of the Valley of the Gods and some of Monument Valley off in the distance.
And here’s a video.
It seems the world is made up of cliffs, rocks, mountains and valleys..and I am not jealous of your trip one bit! I even had to close my eyes during some of your video clips..Your dialog was worthy of a screen writing award but you did capture the wind if not the temperature of each area. Dogs looked cute and so did you Steph. A great geography lesson.
