Custom Land Cruiser Roof Rack Build (Part 4)

fj40 roof rackThis aluminum roof rack project is taking much longer than I thought it would….

I was able to get the basket rail welded up today. I’m just about out of 5356 welding wire. I hope the UPS guy brings some more tomorrow.

The weather is supposed to be nicer tomorrow. I’ll be able to get back out into the driveway. Hopefully it’s not too windy. It’s hard to weld in the wind.

I’ll be spending a bunch of time with the hole saw notching the aluminum sheet metal so it fits around the uprights for the basket rail. When that’s done I’ll start welding the strips in place. I need to come up with a way to make sure it stays flat while I’m welding on it. I don’t want the bow to get any worse. (Leaving the heavy stuff on it didn’t help much if any.)

The spool gun showed up today. I hope to mess with it tomorrow when I pick up some welding wire for it. It uses the smaller 1 lb. rolls and I only have the 8″ rolls.

Here’s some pictures of today’s progress:
