We’ve been hanging in Torrey, Utah the past couple of days avoiding the unpleasant camping weather. Our camp spot in the San Rafael Swell area was the last camping I think we’ll do this trip. While we were out exporing the area the wind kicked up and blew our tent into the bushes. We didn’t have it properly staked to the ground. One of the support poles broke and every surface of the tent’s contents is covered with red rock dust, even the insides of our sleeping bags. You expect a little dirt while camping but you just can’t get comfortable in this much dusty filth. Combine that with snow, freezing rain and wind and it’s just miserable for tent camping.
We did get enough of a break in the weather today to take a couple of walks in the Fishlake National Forest which is just outside of Torrey. It’s very scenic and a nice place to hike. If you’re into rock collecting and geology it’s the perfect destination. We collected a few cool stones along the way.
As a result of the crappy weather and forecast we’ve decided to skip the Grand Canyon and Escalante portions of the trip. We’ve covered such a wide array of landscapes on this trip that we won’t really be missing out on anything. We were going to hit these areas over the next few days which happens to be Memorial Day weekend too. The crowds would be miserable since the weather will keep the towns congested. We’re going to head to the Monument Valley area tomorrow instead and after that head to Crested Butte, CO for a visit. A few days of hiking and relaxing in Crested Butte and we’ll be off to Ohio. We’ll most likely be back in Maine around June 6th or 7th.
Here’s a clip of what the weather has been like the past couple of days. It’s going to continue like this for another day or two.
