Just a quick update on our last night in Merida before we leave for Isla Holbox in the morning.
This afternoon we took a day trip down to the cenote zone about 45 miles south of Merida. A cenote is a sinkhole in the limestone bedrock that makes up most of the Yucatan peninsula. What a fun day. Getting there wasn´t exactly easy but well worth the trip. I don´t recall the names of the small towns we passed through, I´ll try to post them some other time.
Our destination was a co-op in former mayan farming territory. We were pulled by horse on a converted mining cart and narrow gauge rails about 45 minutes out into the middle of nowhere. There are three pretty spectacular cenotes out there. We were able to swim in all of them. Very cool. I´ve got plenty of pictures. I hope they came out. It was quite dark in the last one and the camera´s batteries were getting low.
I´ll post pictures later when we have better internet access. It might not be until after we get home.
We had a nice dinner of chicken enchiladas mole negra (black sauce) a dessert in the market and we´re off to get some sleep. We´ve got a long day of driving the back roads of the northern Yucatan tomorrow and then four days hanging on the beach at Isla Holbox.
