Rufus The Doofus

Bimbo is everywhere in Mexico. Even on Isla Holbox.

We spent the night in Cancun last night. Holy shit is Cancun a miserable place if you enjoy places like Isla Holbox. We stayed at Avalon Bacarra. For $150 it’s a “3 Star” hotel which apparently means there aren’t many bed bugs. (I’m all bit up.) It’s right across the street from Bubba Gump’s Shrimp Company. The room reaked of cigarettes and had no fresh air ventilation system. We couldn’t even open a window.

We’ll never, stay in Cancun again, even at a 5 Star establishment. There’s a least 20 McDonald’s franchises for the 21 kilometers of hotel zone. It’s nothing like Mexico. It’s the land of strip malls, crappy food franchises and overpriced tourist activities. The beach in the central and northern hotel zone areas is almost gone from the last hurricane. You can’t walk the beach at high tide. It’s a miserable place. I don’t understand its appeal. Maybe this is why Tulum is becoming more popular?

On the other hand Isla Holbox is paradise if you like a small, sleepy, authentic Mexican beach experience. It’s not easy to get to but well worth the trip. Posada Mawimbi is perfect. The rooms are comfortable. The grounds are meticulously maintained. The staff is very friendly. I could go on and on but it’s one of those kinds of places that I should just shut up about so it’s not overrun by tourists.

We took a bunch of pictures of Isla Holbox and Posada Mawimbi. I have a few video clips of the grounds too from my digital camera. I’ll post them soon. The internet service here at the airport is too slow. We’ll be home tonight. (I wonder how much snow is there?) It will be nice to be back with the dogs and get the wood stove cranked up nice and warm. It’s been 9 days and I’m ready to be home again.
