Aussie Pistons

New H diesel psitons installed

I’ve been kinda busy with a work project for the past couple of weeks and haven’t had much time to work on the Cruisers. I was able to spend a few hours today installing the pistons and rings in the old Toyota H diesel engine. I had to order the pistons from Australia since these engines were never use in production vehicles in the U.S.

I spent an hour last night cleaning the head gasket material off of the block. There’s no easy way to do it but it has to be done. I’ve been watching eBay for a Makita short throw air chisel for years. A friend in California had one and they are the best thing for removing gasket material from cast iron blocks and cylinder heads. The chisel only moves twenty-five thousandths of an inch which is ideal and makes it hard to accidentally chisel into the surface below the gasket. I hope to find one of these chisels some day.

Installing pistons is a simple yet tedious job when the engine block is still bolted into the frame. Lots of crawling under and back out to measure ring end gaps, torque specs, etc. It took 4 hours to install 6 pistons but at least it’s done. Now I can get to work on installing the cylinder head sometime this week.
