I’m finally getting around to working on the Toyota HJ45 Troopy that I bought last year. I’ve been fighting intermittent low compression numbers on one cylinder for about 1500 miles since I got it on the road. It’s become a big problem so I decided to pull the head and pistons to inspect the problem.
I knew the engine was tired but I wasn’t expecting the pistons and rings to look like this.

This is the piston from the bad cylinder. The others aren’t as bad but are far from ideal. So it looks like I’ll need a whole new set of pistons and rings before I put it back together. This is one of those instances where having an Australian truck kinda sucks. I’ll have to order the parts from there and wait a few weeks for shipping.
At least I’m finally making some progress.
